Fall fashion simply can’t be beat. It just can’t. The cozy layers, the warm colors, the boots, the coats, the denim. There’s a reason everyone looks forward to it every year. As you already know from past posts, I get almost all my inspiration for a new season from Pinterest. And while it’s so, so fun to look through and gather photos, in the end I can wind up overwhelmed by all the pieces I (think I) need. That’s when it’s time to get back to basics. In this case, fall basics.
Street style and high fashion flood most people’s Pinterest feeds & both can be an intimidating source of inspiration. All those flawless style icons layer amazing, high-quality pieces, it’s hard to imagine recreating it. But… if you really, truly break it down by looking at the individual pieces rather than the entire look itself, all of a sudden the outfits become attainable. These ladies are simply creatively mixing the basics. In a lot of cases, they’ll even pair high-end with low-end (think a $20 sweater with a $300 pair of boots) to elevate the look without spending a ton on each item. It’s truly a craft, it takes practice, but with some solid fall basics in your closet, you can easily create those outfits too.
Tips for creating the perfect outfit with fall basics
- Buy simple items that can be easily layered
- Stick with neutral colors for a chic look
- Add interest with animal print or houndstooth
- Mix high and low pieces
- Add structure to casual silhouettes for a more put-together appearance (you know my favorite solution – blazers!)
When I snagged this cozy black sweatshirt from American Eagle, I really started thinking about what makes the perfect fall look. Like all of AE’s items, this sweatshirt is so soft, fits generously (allowing room for my bump) and is great quality for the price. I’m really focused on comfort right now and throwing a blazer over an otherwise casual piece instantly makes the outfit presentable for numerous occasions. Work, date night, dinner with friends or even just hopping around town. I also ordered these snake print mules at the same time… no regrets. They’re perfect & under $40. See? Easy, peasy.
