As weird as it sounds, most of us can find common ground when talking about what we watch on TV in our spare time. Am I right, or am I right? Kind of like the weather. Don’t know what to discuss? Turn to your most recent must watch. Debate over the season finale or your favorite character. Personally, these tend to be my favorite discussions because Tyler and I have always loved great cinema. Our first date was going to see The Town and we love that movie to this day. Over the past few years, more and more binge-worthy series have also grabbed our attention, so we always have something in queue.
What we’ve been watching lately has been a huge melting pot. Summer TV isn’t always the best since most big releases are in the fall or winter. We’ve taken recommendations, restarted some oldies and got Emmett straight up addicted to Moana on accident. There are worst things, I suppose. Below is the list of our recent most notable, including where to stream.
What We’ve Been Watching Lately
Marvel Universe – in chronological order (Disney+)
We are huge Marvel people. Not the comic type, but the typical really-love-their-impossibly-entertaining-movies type. The casts, the hidden messages, the overall story. Truly box office gold. Precisely why they are the most impressive movie franchise ever to be created. Anyway, we’ve seen them all (with the exception of the multiple TV series), but we heard about this trend of watching them in chronological order. Not release date. There’s a difference! We’re using this list – or one very similar – to determine which one next. It’s going to take some time, but we’ve had a lot of fun so far. Rewatching each movie, now knowing the Avengers story, makes them so much more impactful. Highly recommend if you’re a Marvel fanatic like we are.
Quentin Tarantino movies (mostly Hulu & HBOMax)
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have heard me ramble about this already. A Joe Rogan podcast episode interviewing Quentin led us down the path of watching all nine of his movies. In case you weren’t already aware, Tarantino infamously announced he will only make ten total movies in his career. His epic titles like Inglorious Bastards and The Hateful Eight rank high on our list of overall favorites. But we’ve loved diving into his beginnings with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. These movies are not for the faint of heart. A gruesome bloody scene or two is always expected. But we love his style of writing and directing.
The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
Definitely behind the times on this one, but being able to binge has been worth it. I honestly had no idea what to expect when we started this insane series. I’ve had a hard time with it. T has completely given up. It’s not the best thing we’ve ever watched, but I can’t not finish. Would I recommend it? Not to everyone. But I really love an epic drama series and this delivers. Just be prepared for some real darkness. The story moves slow. You have to appreciate character development and cinematography to truly enjoy the show altogether.
Dave (Hulu)
Where I’m big on drama, Tyler is huge on comedy. And we are both obsessed with Dave. The comedy series revolves around the real life rapper Lil Dicky (whom I had never heard of). It’s hilarious, will make you appreciate a good beat and makes me feel like I have absolutely no style. Because it’s based in LA and the wardrobe department nails it. That’s half the entertainment for me, but it really is a great show. Funny, with a side of seriousness.
Dark Side Of The 90s (Hulu)
This has been so much fun to watch. Each episode explores a different happening or trend of the 90s (think grunge bands or beanie babies) and its effects on the decade. We remember all of it, but don’t know half of it if that. makes any sense. The documentary-like interviews are fantastic and the facts uncovered are beyond interesting.
Hacks (HBOMax)
I stumbled on this series when I had the TV to myself, so alas, I watch it solo. And although it’s a comedy, I don’t know if Tyler would love it as much as I do. An aging comedian based on Las Vegas unwillingly hires a young writer from LA to help her improve her act. After the first couple episodes of back-handed jokes, you realize there’s a lot more drama going on. My favorite thing about the entire show is how they touch on generational differences without being too heavy. You see viewpoints from both sides while getting a solid laugh or two. I think the acting is fantastic. Hoping season 2 delivers like the first!
