Oh, the recent drama of finding the perfect wedding guest dress. Aren’t we all a little freaked out about buying actual occasion clothes again? Just me?
Once our first official social gathering was on the 2021 calendar for early June, I started drooling at the idea of buying a new dress. It was time. I was ready. Until the browsing began and I almost immediately felt uninspired. There was nothing. I thought I was crazy until a few friends and followers mentioned having the same issue. It’s still hard to figure out – maybe retailers are still struggling post-pandemic. Maybe the trends aren’t anyone’s cup of tea. Whatever the issue, it made for a very long and tiring search.
The dramatic wedding guest dress search
I started browsing for a dress for the highly anticipated weekend in mid-April, quickly giving up my search as everything was too “springy”. The floral, the pastels. Plus, a lot of long sleeve which is great, but I knew I’d need something lighter by early June. Unfortunately, when I started searching again in May, not much had changed. Frustration set in. Nothing to choose from, what are these prairie dress styles, it’s all ugly or just too trendy. I asked for follower suggestions and was pointed in a few promising directions, but alas, Zara saved the day last minute.
Our wedding season was short and sweet (one and done!), but I know a lot of you have multiple functions to dress up for this summer. So, I’ve kept on digging. New arrivals are slowly trickling in at retailers I frequent, but the variety is shockingly low. Here is a very curated list of dresses I’ve scoured for and really do love.
The results
Mini Dress
The mini dress is definitely having a moment with all the 90s revival trends. You’ll most likely find me in midi length or a jumpsuit, but I couldn’t help crushing on a few of these modern styles. I love the ruched floral trend and also this modern & chic leopard print one from Asos.
A classic choice
My typical route, you can never go wrong with something classic and simple, especially in black. This Zara cut out midi dress won me over the instant I put it on (pictured above). The best part of sticking to a neutral color and silhouette is you don’t have to spend a fortune to make it look good. Black is so flattering on everyone and the simple designs can easily be dressed up with funky heels or statement jewelry. Or leave it and go extra chic.
Outdoor wedding
With a more casual setting, I’m immediately drawn to linen-like fabrics, relaxed skirts and dainty patterns. I actually ordered this green dress from Petal & Pup, but ultimately returned it because I simply didn’t need it. It’s fantastic though. The open back is the perfect contrast to the conservative neckline and the green is beautiful. It does come in other colors, too.
Right on trend
Asymmetrical, ruched, square neck, slip dress, dainty floral… it’s all on trend. Puff sleeves, too, but I just can’t. I’m personally very into the slip dress and this orange a-line option from H&M is gorgeous. It’s a slip dress, but a little more forgiving and dance floor friendly. Honestly, the best selection I’ve found for trendy dresses is at Zara. I can’t link my picks here, but you can visit their site and browse for yourself. And try not to buy everything!
Guidelines to keep in mind while shopping
Dress for the occasion
Event dressing relies heavily on where and when. Outdoor wedding? Think lightweight material, a pretty floral or maxi length. Fancy cocktail hour at a swanky venue? Maybe a trendy mini dress or a simple slip dress with gorgeous heels.
Never anything too flashy (or white!)
You can have fun, but save the club dresses for well, the club. The bride deserves all the attention, so don’t steal the show. And do I have to say this? No white unless the dress code calls for it.
Have fun
That being said, you can still have fun with your wedding guest dress. Try a trend you’ve been drooling over. Wear a different neckline or color. We all deserve a night out feeling special in what we’re wearing. It’s been a long year in sweats!
