Spring is, by far, my least favorite time of year. We don’t get a fun, beautiful, storybook season in the Midwest. There’s mud. A few weeks of fake spring. Then we get another freeze. Then a little rain. Followed by almost immediate humidity and bam, summer comes. Is that a bit dramatic? Sure. There are some scattered mid-60s days with the sun shining and birds chirping. It’s just not enough for me to get excited about.
Anyway, this year I’m trying to be more optimistic about spring. Can you tell? Ha! We did have a fantastic, snowy winter and we even got to escape to Breckenridge for a weekend. I’m usually sad to see winter melt, but I can leave it this year feeling satisfied. Besides that positive outlook, there are all the great spring fashion trends. Because I usually roll my eyes at all the pastels and floral, this has surprised me in a good way. My Pinterest board has been filling up with ideas. I keep getting inspiration from browsing my favorite retailers. There are so many good things on the horizon, but one I’ve finally jumped all in on is matching sets. Loungewear isn’t going anywhere for now!
Where to find affordable matching sets
If you’re like me, even though matching sets are on repeat, you’re still looking for a good deal. Since it’s an outfit investment, you can easily spend over $100, but I’m more comfortable hitting below $75. Which is totally doable thanks to retailers like Target, Aerie and NastyGal. In this post, I’m wearing the Wild Fable jogger set from Target and the shorts and crop set from Aerie.
Target
I can’t say enough good things about my first Wild Fable purchase from Target. Such a comfortable matching set. Comes in multiple colors and each piece can easily be worn separately. And it rings in at $30 total.
Aerie
When I think of comfortable, I immediately think of Aerie. Anything I’ve purchased from them has performed and remained in my closet for many seasons. I specifically wanted a shorts and sweatshirt set to transition into spring with and Aerie has multiple. Aerie actually offers trios – shorts and sweatpants with a matching sweatshirt – which is really fun, and they’re notorious for great sales.
NastyGal
Always marked down at least 50%, you can find a straight up deal at NastyGal on trendy matching sets. They all look so cozy, I don’t even know which one to add to cart. I’ve heard nothing but good things from anyone who’s ordered their loungewear.
Why matching sets aren’t going anywhere
Matching sets have become a permanent fixture in our fashion vocabulary for a few reasons. People are still working from home. A lot of them transitioning into those positions for the long haul and that need to feel comfortable and put together remains. When we are safely out and about, it still feels rather casual because human interaction isn’t the same. And the fashion world has found really creative ways to weave loungewear into every day looks before the rumored roaring 20s returns (wink, wink).
Personally, I’m here for it. I love the edgy look of mixing casual pieces with structured, more formal layers. Think hoodies under shackets, joggers paired with polos or knit shorts matched with a blazer. Completely unexpected but perfect for the weird times we’re living in. Long live matching sets!
