I’m guilty of turning on Christmas music already. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday so I rarely do anything Christmas-y before the turkey is served. But when E and I were shopping small in Des Moines’ East Village the other day, the snowflakes started falling. People were milling about buying gifts. I couldn’t help it. No decorations yet… just an innocent Spotify playlist.
Like many others, my overall goal for holiday shopping this year has been to support small and local businesses. Not only have they had a tough year already, the future is still so uncertain. Lockdowns are happening again and it’s imperative we give what we can to support these people and their livelihood.
I’ve done online shopping with some, picked up on doorsteps of others and visited shops in person (masked up, of course). Whatever you feel comfortable with, these businesses are making it happen. Going into the crazy sales weekend ahead, I wanted to highlight some retailers I’m shopping small with this holiday season.
Small & Local Retailers I’m Supporting
Darling Daylight
Abbie is a close friend & she’s making the most amazing hand stamped necklaces that make an incredible gift.
Des Moines Mercantile
Right down the road from our house, this is my new favorite stop. They just started listing select items online!
Kitchen Collage
A local shop in Des Moines’ East Village, they have a great online shop, too. I love their selection of high quality kitchen items.
Askov Finlayson
Gifting with a purpose, Askov lives by the phrase “Keep The North Cold”. You know I’m on board.
The Vinyl Studio
The best graphic tees in the city & these girls know how to style them!
Erin Hill Ceramics
So talented, I bought from Erin this year and it won’t be the last time!
Slouch Headwear
Found this Utah-based brand while looking for a newborn beanie for Emmett. The only cold weather hats he wears & they have a great sale going on.
Love & Grey
I know Katie through a family member & she’s turned her shop into a boho-lovers dream.
AllSpice
Their curated gift boxes of spices, rubs and oils make the most amazing gifts.

I miss the East Village so much! We always had a night out around the holidays in that area complete with shopping and ice skating. So many good memories. Like you, I’m shopping small wherever I can for gifts this year!
