As 50 degree, rainy days have settled into Des Moines this week, I happily trade my shorts and tees for jeans and hoodies. But on my way to reach for a hoodie, I graze by a few sweaters I didn’t store away from last winter. I almost grab one when I realize… it’s only September. I’m not quite ready for full on sweater weather. Because in Iowa, we have winter temps until April. So if we dive in too deep now, we’ll be wearing sweaters for almost 7 months. I love the cold, but I need a softer transition than that.
If you’re like me and you’re trying to save most sweaters until actual winter, here are some good alternatives to style for fall while still being completely in the right season.
Lightweight turtlenecks
You can spend $10 or $100 on a layering turtleneck, and I’m here to tell you the cost-per-wear on either will be pennies in no time. A handful already hang in my closet, but I’m never against adding another. I suggest stocking the staple solids (black, gray, white/beige), then adding a couple prints (stripes, leopard). I own this affordable one from H&M and absolutely love it. They are classic, comfortable, easy to layer and make any outfit look put-together.
Blazers
Until I’m ready to grab those heavy knits, you’ll see me in blazers constantly. Wearing a beautiful blazer just makes you feel good. Am I right? These key wardrobe pieces can be worn any time of year, but I especially love them in the fall. Oversized blazers can be double as a light jacket with layers underneath. They all look great with denim and you can dress them up or down depending on what footwear you grab.
Structured flannel
Is it even fall if you don’t pull out a flannel? The cozy, typically plaid-patterned button-ups will always be a staple while the leaves change. But honestly, I’m over the ill-fitting boyfriend styles that pop up on everyone’s Instagram after their pumpkin patch weekend. I personally prefer a more structured look these days. It feels more modern and fresh. I’m a big fan of shackets – a shirt/jacket mix that can be layered under as a jacket, or worn alone as a shirt. A little harder to come by, but here a few I’m loving for fall.
Knit vest
I’m geeking out over this throwback trend. At least 20 years has gone by since the last time I donned a sweater vest, but I’m all about it. Call it nostalgia, whatever. These 90s revival trends are doing something for me. Two knit vests are en route to my door step as I write this. More and more styles are popping up as they gain popularity, so I may have a whole collection by the time winter comes. I love these for fall because it creates the cozy, bourgeoisie vibes we all cherish without actually wrapping you up prematurely. Grab one now if you’re into it, because I forecast them being hard to find.
The forecast says 80 for Friday. Fall is coming, but it’s not here to stay quite yet.
