As I sit here finishing this post on Sunday evening after a long holiday weekend at the lake, I’m looking around thinking about how badly I need to clean my house. It’s not terrible, but a couple weeks have gone by since the last good cleaning. With Cooper in the house, that means it’s overdue. So, I know what my nights will looks like this week. On the surface though, my house may fool you into thinking it’s not as bad as it is. Why? I have a few tricks to keeping it’s appearance up on a daily basis. There are 4 daily habits I swear by to keep your house clean – or appear to be clean – and I’m sharing them with you below.
Make your bed every morning
We’ve all seen (or heard about) the famous commencement speech about making your bed in the morning, right? Well, I’m preaching the same thing. It’s a small task that brings a lot of order into the home. Accomplish that and the rest of the day will fall into order. I’m definitely not perfect – sometimes the snooze gets hit too often leaving no extra minutes in the morning. But, I will say, on those days I definitely feel more stressed when I get home.
Have a place for the “stuff”
Junk drawers! We all have one. And if you don’t, please send me your tips. I’m not necessarily talking about the items that qualify to land in these designated drawers though. I’m talking about all the things that land on the kitchen table, or the entryway shelves. “Stuff” that no one ever knows what to do with. Since we have a smaller home, the stuff truly gets in the way. I always make sure to designate a spot for it. Headphones, wallets, keys, reusable grocery bags, to-go coffee cups. Put it away and out of sight – same place every time so you know where to find them.
Keep your kitchen sink empty
Honestly, a clean kitchen makes me so happy. I make an effort to have all the dishes picked up or put in the dishwasher every night. Sometimes it requires a little extra hand-washing or unloading, but it’s always worth the extra few minutes to wake up to clean space in the morning. Then, all we need to worry about is the coffee!
Spend 5 minutes at the end of the night putting things away
Along with the extra minutes in the kitchen, I also spend at least 5 minutes tidying up our living space. Or bathroom. Or bedroom. Whatever it may be. It’s not to say every space is always clean – it absolutely is not (as I currently have a pile of laundry waiting to be folded in our guest room) – but it’s more about staying on top of things. If you let it all go throughout the week, you’ll have that much more to clean on the weekend. But, if you clean up here and there, the cleaning days feel so much less overwhelming.

These are great tips! I always make sure to empty the kitchen sink and our drying mat before I go to bed – nothing better than waking up to a clean kitchen!
