Buying Pieces For A Functional Wardrobe

When I say functional wardrobe, I’m really speaking to those who dress for the office (or for a work-related role on weekdays) and then also need outfits for extracurricular activities. These activities could include date nights, happy hour with the girls, traveling or even Netflix binging on the couch. With all the things everyone has going on during the week, we can’t possibly shop for every. single. one.

That’s why I’m adamant about building a functional wardrobe. One that includes great office outfits that can translate into other areas of my life. Ok, my Netflix binging sweatpants don’t work at the office. But I’ll just budget those in. Every piece of this office-friendly outfit I have on below, however, can absolutely be worn for other occasions.

It’s hard to know where to start in building said wardrobe. So, of course, I provided my personalized list of items to get started. These pieces are things I personally have (or plan to have) in my closet at the moment. Each and every one helps me build looks day in and day out.

Structured pieces like blazers & vests

There’s nothing better than a structured blazer or vest (like the one I’m wearing here) to top off an outfit. In my personal opinion, anyway. When I’m having one of those days where nothing in my closet feels right, I pull out my blazers. Instant mood-lifter and they always look chic and put-together. While I would say these are investment pieces, you can find really great deals, too. I scored one of my favorite plaid blazers at H&M for $13 & this BCBGeneration vest is currently on sale for under $50. No matter if you spend a little or spend a lot, these items will become instant classics in your wardrobe.

Black pants

Seriously, if you don’t have a good pair of black pants in your closet, run, don’t walk, to Banana Republic and grab the Sloan skinny-fit pant. These are the best pants and if you score them during a BR sale, it’s a lot of bang for your buck. I’ve been wearing Sloans for years and wear them weekly. They’re comfortable, they stand the test of time and they are great for the office. And literally anywhere you want to wear them. I believe in adding a pair of black denim to your closet, too. But, start with the Sloan pant and work your way to denim.

Basic sweaters & tops

This is pretty obvious. But since I pulled out a basic black sweater for this look, I figured it’s noteworthy. It’s safe to say 95% of my sweaters & tops fall into the “basic” category. I love having a bunch of neutrals available to layer and style differently. You don’t have to have a deep inventory. Start with some white, beige, black and navy options. Then, dive into stripes and maybe even polka dots for a couple prints. You’ll be surprised how much you’ll end up mixing and matching.

Jumpers and business casual dresses

A jumper is actually something I’m in the market for. They’re making a comeback! My mom said she used to wear jumpers on repeat, and I can see why. They’re so versatile – you can wear different tops underneath, choose new accessories, wear different shoes – the options are endless. Plus, they totally qualify as a business casual option for the office and they’re adorable for date night or even brunch with the girls.

Simple tote

I actually don’t by bags or purses very often, but having a couple basics is key to completing outfits. I’m obsessed with this one I was gifted for Christmas from Anthropologie. The acetate handles are having a moment and a beige bag is never a bad idea. I also use my black tote bag frequently. My one tip – keep the shape simple for a cleaner look with any outfit.

Classic boot

If you take away one thing from this list, please take this. Shoes are a very important component of any look – see my last post – and having a couple pairs of quality, good-looking boots will go a long ways. Don’t know where to start? Try adding a medium brown pair of riding boots. Then, pick up a classic black bootie with a mid-height heel. The ones I’m wearing have a snake print texture which is on trend, but also adds great detail.

I’d love to know – how do you feel about building a functional wardrobe?
