I’m not a big resolutions person. I often want to be, and typically finding myself saying “oh, that will be my resolution!” at least once before January ends. Even though that’s still bound to happen again within the next few weeks, I decided to focus on different ways to kick off the new year right instead of those hefty resolutions. And by that I specifically mean finding ways (no matter how small) to start fresh and enter 2019 on a positive note. Feeling good, feeling reenergized & ready to tackle the next 365. I’m a believer in small steps to a larger goal – they’re easier to digest – and these small acts go along with that idea. So, while we’re all trying to kick that after-holiday hangover, here is my list of ways to kick off the new year right.
Fill out your planner
First things first, make sure to get a planner! I’ve been a religious planner-carrier (unofficial title) for years now and I have no idea what I’d do without it. Or how T and I would manage planning anything. I’m also very picky about my planners and over the past couple years have been testing out new ones. This year, I opted for Ilana Griffo’s Rule The World Planner and am anxious to see how it performs. So far, I have birthdays, anniversaries & other important dates marked for 2019. I’ll figure out a good system for my to-do lists as these first few weeks go on. Kicking off my year on an organized note is imperative for my sanity and planners are the perfect all-in-one solution.
Rearrange a room
This may sound a bit odd, but last week while I was off work & taking a break from the blog, I had time to do some real deep house cleaning. And with that came some rearranging of items. In this case, no furniture was rearranged (small house, little options), but I moved some art to different spots & just little things here and there. I actually found it super refreshing and it gave me a little hint of excitement to start the new year with a semi-new space. Plus, you’re probably taking down holiday decorations, so might as well make an effort to refresh the area at the same time.
Get rid of one bad habit
Sometimes I do resolutions, sometimes I don’t (see above). So, going along with my “smaller steps” idea, I thought why not just get rid of one bad habit? It could be drinking too much coffee, it could be eating sugar or even waiting too long to do the laundry. Something simple. For me, I’m hoping to break one bad habit in 2019 – sleeping in too late. I’m not a morning person and probably never will be, but it’s time to gain control over my snooze button. Any tips?
Try a new recipe
This kind of goes along with rearranging a room. I think starting off the new year trying new things in general is such a positive idea. And maybe you don’t want to change anything in your home, so why not change it up in the kitchen? Go a step beyond a simple recipe & try a whole new cuisine you’ve never attempted. Or simply pick up a recipe book covered in dust and see if there’s something that sparks your interest that may not have before. I think that sounds so fun and you can count me in on this one. If you need ideas, feel free to explore my own recipe box.
Jump into a work out routine
I know, I know. DUH. January brings the biggest boost in exercise routines already, but I’m a believer in it. Even if you’ll fall behind by spring, moving and getting those endorphins bumping while the weather stinks is so important. Plus, we all have those extra holiday calories to lose – who else binged on goodies this year? My hand is raised. I went ahead and signed up for a January challenge with my favorite work out app, Gixo. I’m counting on them & the Gixo community to keep me accountable and I know they will.
How do you feel about resolutions?

Happy new year, girl! I love your idea for rearranging a room or things in the house – sometimes a fresh perspective/space is the best way to get inspired for the days ahead. I could use all the tips, too on not sleeping in too late … it’s awful hard this year with the nasty weather!
