To be completely honest, I’ve never been too worried about putting together a Thanksgiving outfit. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I’m typically more concentrated on the delicious meal than about what I will wear. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have specific rules for actually choosing a Thanksgiving outfit. No matter how casual the gathering, I always want to look nice and comfort is always a top priority. But I have a couple other things to consider as well. You’ll find the three things I think about when choosing a Thanksgiving outfit below.
Know the dress code
I’ve never actually been to a really fancy Thanksgiving like the ones on on Gossip Girl(weren’t those the best episodes?!), but I can only imagine the pressure of finding a perfect outfit. Knowing the dress code to your gathering is the first step to deciding what to wear. Our family time usually revolves around a big meal and watching football, so we’re pretty casual. Jeans, sweater, a pair of cozy socks and we’re set. But if you’re headed to something more formal, I would choose a dress with boots or dressing up a casual outfit with a structured blazer.
Comfort should be key
No matter what the dress code, keep comfort in mind. There’s nothing worse than wearing something uncomfortable, eating a large meal and trying to relax after. Honestly, sometimes even jeans are too much for me to worry about because a lot of mine are skinny fit & just don’t do me any favors on Thanksgiving. This year I’m considering the pants I’m wearing in this post. They are high-waist, loose fit through the leg and the fabric stretches. Plus, they look somewhat dressy without feeling like it. I found this striped pair at Modish – an amazing local boutique in Decorah, Iowa. My mom and I spent a day exploring the town and I walked away with more than just these pants. They’re not available online but I’ve linked similar styles below.
Consider layers & choose the right shoes
Does anyone else tend to get hot at family gatherings? Just me? Ok. Well, I run hot-blooded, so I’m always thinking about layers. A cardigan I can take off or put on (depending on the situation) is a perfect solution. But beyond the added top layer, let’s talk about socks. When I say “choose the right shoes” I’m going back to my point of knowing the dress code & the type of gathering you’re attending. Is it a party where shoes are allowed to be worn? Great. Wear whatever you want. Will you have to ditch them at the door? Think twice. If you’re donning flats or heels, I highly recommend packing a pair of socks. I hate walking around someone’s house with bare feet when it’s 20 degrees outside. Then I will actually get cold. There’s no shame in pulling socks out of your bag – I’ve done it a hundred times.
Do you have any Thanksgiving outfit rules to stick by?

Great tips! I’m with you that comfort is key – genius idea about packing a pair of socks. And, I’m with you about getting really warm at family gatherings! I spend a lot of time helping out in the kitchen, and I’m usually ready to take a shower by the time we’re done eating lol.

Great tips girlfriend!! Comfort is definitely key, but style doesn’t have to be compromised!
