I feel like the summer to fall wardrobe topic gets discussed frequently. I actually posted about the transition last year around this time as well, but instead of giving you specific items to wear, I wanted to be more inspirational this time around. Some may be excited to stock up on new sweaters for the season, some may be crying over their swim suit being stuffed away. But, no matter what, change is upon us and it’s time to transition from a summer to fall wardrobe. In my world, this is a pretty gradual process – mostly due to Midwest weather patterns – so below, I have 4 ways to transition into your fall outfits.
Pair short hems with long sleeves
The same goes for the opposite – pair long hems with short sleeves. Think a denim button down with a mini skirt, or a graphic tee with a midi skirt. Shorts with a sweatshirt, jeans with a tank. Actually, these mixtures are my favorite kind. Probably because it means cool nights and sunny days with a nice breeze are upon us. But, the weather can be tricky and there’s nothing worse than wearing too many layers while it’s still 80 degrees outside in late September. The pairing of contrasting lengths helps guide your outfits into the new season without compromising your comfort.
Swap out sandals for mules and ankle boots
Time to put the toes away. Unless you’re still on the beach somewhere. I have a little pet peeve about people wearing the wrong shoes for the season. So let’s give up the sandals sooner than later. Mules are my personal favorite shoe choice at the moment, so you’ll be seeing me in a variation daily. But, I still love a good ankle boot, too. Save the tall riding boots for later in the season – we all know there is plenty of cold weather ahead to utilize them.
Wear summery silhouettes in darker colors
If the heat just won’t let up, my solution is to wear something summery in a darker color. For instance, my ultimate favorite Madwell shorts in olive green. Or a simple romper in black. Something that will keep you comfortable while not looking too summery. Put the bright florals away, if you must wear a tank top, go for a muted color. You get the idea.
Add more accessories
There’s something about my summer wardrobe that makes accessories seem unnecessary. Maybe it’s the light fabrics or simplicity of it all. Either way, I tend to add more and more accessories as I transition from summer to fall. Statement earrings, larger bags, belts, and hats are all good options. I’m also crushing on neck scarves this year, so add those to your list. This works like layers which you can add piece by piece as the weather allows. A chunky necklace here, stacked bangles there.
Talking about all this makes me so excited for fall style! I don’t believe in rules that can’t be broken in fashion, especially when owning your personal style, so take this as you will. But, I try to stay seasonally appropriate when styling outfits, and the above is what I stick to.
How do you transition from summer to fall?
