How The Denim Skirt Still Works

The denim skirt exploded again last summer and if you’re like me, you may have cringed thinking about that 90s trend making a comeback.  I’d prefer to leave my middle school days in the dust, thank you very much.  Even though those feelings are true about middle school, in the end I couldn’t help but hop on the trend train right before the summer season ended.  I’m happy to report I’ve actually got good use out of the updated denim skirt this past year.  And really, not much has actually been “updated” – maybe the color selection & distressed look – but otherwise, the classic look remains just that.  Classic (or classic 90s).

I’d like to think we’ve transitioned the jean skirt look into something more modern.  But the more I look for outfit inspiration, the more I realize we’re mimicking the 90s almost exactly.  I almost took the plunge back into Tommy Hilfiger graphic tees this summer (ok… I still want one) and platform sneakers are also back and a perfect denim companion.  Crop tops? Chokers?  Yup.  All back and ready for action.  Truly, all 90s outfits of my childhood dreams.

Although today’s outfit isn’t as edgy as all the denim skirt looks the 90s “it” girls wore out, I still like to imagine I’m on my way there.  Instead of a ripped up band tee, I opt for my new favorite basic striped tee from Madewell.  Instead of Doc Martens, I’m putting those American Eagle pool slides to use once again.  I’m honestly in love with this outfit.  It’s laid back and easy for the summer weekends we have left.  Or great for a vacation getaway.  That’s how I think the denim skirt still works – keep it simple, easy & casual.
