here’s to the blooms.

Spring may have sprung a few weeks ago, but I’m still relishing in the fresh blooms.  Now that we’re past the muddy mess this season begins with, our weekend plans revolve around yard work, house cleaning, and greenhouse hopping.  Along with everyone else in this urban population.

We’re lucky to be neighbors with one of the best greenhouses in town so most of my shopping is done in our backyard.  But, you’ll still find me strolling through many others around town, even if it’s only to sip Starbucks on a Saturday morning among the Impatiens.

You’d think gardening would be second nature to a farmer’s daughter, but unfortunately, the green thumb isn’t always genetic.  I’m nowhere near a full post of gardening advice, but through trial and error the past few years, here are few things I’ve learned:

  • Strawberries are difficult, but not impossible.  The key is getting them thru the winter.  Any suggestions out there?
  • Green pepper plants are very resilient, but they need plant food for the best harvest.
  • Geraniums are the best flower to plant if you’re not a “gardener”.  They are so easy to take care of, but trim them up weekly!
  • Successfully growing Cilantro in Iowa is still a mystery to me.
  • Plants are living creatures – show them a little love, too.
  • The weather forecast is important, so pay attention!
  • Don’t be scared to try a new plant – seriously!

So, what did I plant this year?

  • Green Peppers
  • Jalapenos (a new one!)
  • Grape Tomatoes
  • Cucumber (a new one!)
  • Zucchini
  • Onions
  • Lettuce (a new one!)
  • Herb garden: Cilantro, Mint, Oregano, Parsley, Basil, Rosemary
  • Misc. Flowers – including Geraniums!

I truly believe gardening is for anyone, regardless if you were born with a green thumb or not.  Spend time with nature, feed your soul and give back to the earth. And have a little patience with the learning curve (and a dead plant or two).  It will be worth it.

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” -Audrey Hepburn

Are you planting a garden this year?

I really want an allotment or patch in my garden for when I’m older. I’m still living at home as I’m a recent graduate but one day! x
