What do I do on a rainy Saturday at the beginning of spring?
Clean closets. Oh, so exciting.
Last spring we were in the middle of planning a wedding and our annual “spring cleaning” was put on the back burner. As a result, the closets are yelling for help and my wardrobe is aching for organization.
The hubby and I live in a small house built in the 1940s. Very charming and all the space two people need, but you can only imagine the closet size. How did people do it back then? Our seasonal clothing is divided strategically between bedrooms – sweaters here, dresses there, shoes everywhere – so organization and a yearly cleanse is necessary.
I’ve always had a bad habit of keeping clothes too long and allowing them to clog up my closet. Even though I’m OCD about keeping our items color coded and seasonally separated, I still have a hard time putting it all back together after the purge. So, of course, I Googled some help.
The best tips I’ve found are from InStyle’s “20 Best Closet Organizing Tips, Ever”. Did the name give it away?
My top 5 favorite tips from the article:
1. 12 months without wear? Say goodbye. Come to terms with items you won’t ever wear again.
2. Sell! Sell! Sell! Getting rid of clothes can bring in extra cash.
3. Clean the empty space. Dust and vacuum while the clothes are out!
4. Hang like a pro. Use the proper hangers for specific types of clothing – your investments deserve good treatment!
5. Inventory. Make a list of items that need replaced, especially staples like jeans and cardigans.
